Atomic Layer Etching

The first part of the course will cover the basics of plasma ALE.  Si ALE will be described as the model plasma ALE system defined by chlorination and Ar+ ion sputtering.  Other plasma ALE systems will be discussed such as SiO2, Si3N4 and HfO2 ALE.  The second part of the course will cover the basics of thermal ALE.  Al2O3 ALE will be developed as the model thermal ALE system based on fluorination and ligand-exchange reactions.  Other thermal ALE systems will be discussed such as TiN, SiO2 and Si ALE.

Vacuum and Cryogen Safety

Vacuum systems can present a variety of hazards to the laboratory worker.  This course will provide an in-depth discussion of a wide variety of hazards and mitigation techniques related to vacuum systems.  A thorough discussion of the interface between the vacuum system and commonly associated pressure sources will be provided.  Potential accidental overpressure of the vacuum system will be emphasized as well as safety concerns for the use of brittle materials in vacuum applications.

This course provides the basic training required to interpret Residual Gas Analyzer (RGA) data and produce actionable information for process control applications. The operation of an RGA is described, with specific attention dedicated to the multiple tuning parameters available to RGA operators.
