AVS Online Short Courses Now Available!

Does COVID-19 have your company temporarily shut down?

Are your employees home, and do they need more work to do?
COVID-19 has impacted many of us, causing companies to find new ways to keep employees working safely and productively from home. AVS wants to help! AVS Short Courses offer training for technicians, scientists and engineers, and is being offered to you during this challenging time. AVS is bringing three (3) of its AVS Short Courses and our qualified instructors to your home via Zoom!

Cryopump Technology

Instructor: Edwin E. Harrow
Date: Tuesday, July 14, 2020
Time: 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. EDT
Starting with a review of basic vacuum concepts, the operation of cryogenic pumps using closed-loop refrigeration systems will be covered in detail. The operation of helium refrigerator systems and maintenance requirements will be discussed. The creation of vacuum through gas condensation and adsorption on cryogenic surfaces will be explained, especially as it relates to processes such as sputter and evaporative deposition, ion implantation, ultrahigh vacuum research, and other applications..

Partial Pressure Analysis with Residual Gas Analyzers

Instructor: Gerardo Brucker
Date: Wednesday, July 15, 2020
Time: 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. EDT
This course provides the basic training required to interpret Residual Gas Analyzer (RGA) data and produce actionable information for process control applications. The operation of an RGA is described, with specific attention dedicated to the multiple tuning parameters available to RGA operators. Routine calibration, tuning and maintenance procedures are discussed. Typical RGA spectra are shown and analyzed and the interferences from background gases are highlighted. Quantitative calculations of gas concentrations are described.  Relevant literature references, gas libraries, tables and graphs are presented. A portion of time is always reserved to address the specific needs of the group.

Atomic Layer Deposition

Instructor: Steven M. George
Date: Friday, July 17, 2020
Time: 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. EDT
This course develops an understanding of atomic layer deposition (ALD). Al2O3 ALD is first introduced as an ideal model system and then ALD is compared with CVD. Non-ideal ALD behavior is presented before discussing plasma and radical-enhanced ALD. Subsequently, novel surface chemistry is described for metal ALD.
The course reviews the important topic of nucleation and growth during ALD before introducing low temperature ALD. ALD on polymers and ALD on particles are then discussed to illustrate some potential new application areas for ALD.
